Most Common Sports Injuries: Types & Treatments

Updated: Apr 25, 2022

Undoubtedly, performing physical activity whether, for entertainment, health, work, lifestyle, or professional practice, many times has unfortunate sports injuries. A miscalculated tackle in football, basketball or other contact sport or an unexpected fall from a bike in cycling, for example, can withdraw an athlete from competition. For the amateurs, they can simply take away your passion or hobby, and even cause pain on your daily life. That is why it is essential to be careful when dealing with sports injuries. It is important to address the most common sports injuries: the diagnosis, treatments, and recommendations to know how to take care of yourself while doing sports activities. It is useful to gather this information to avoid getting hurt and – because sometimes it’s inevitable – to know what to do when an injury like this happens.

Types of sports injuries

Sports-related injuries can affect different tissues in our body, including bones, tendons, muscles, joints, or ligaments. But what are the most common types of sports injuries?

Here’s a list of sports injuries that affect men and women the most:

  • Sprains: A type of injury that affects the ligaments that join two bones that, in turn, form a joint. If not treated in a timely manner, it can become very painful.

  • Strains: The body indicates that a certain muscle was subjected to a disproportionate stretch. It is usually very painful and occurs due to poor flexibility, overexertion, or improper warm-up before playing sports. It is also known as a tear.

  • Swollen muscles: Reaction of the muscles to being subjected to a lot of stress. It can occur from overexertion or poor stretching while doing physical activity, or from a blow.

  • Rotator cuff injury: It is very common and can be caused by practicing repetitive movements with the arms above the head. It also wears out over time. Musculoskeletal diseases such as arthritis often weaken the area.

  • Knee injuries: Among the most common knee injuries we can mention sprains, bursitis, overuse of the knee, tears, and injuries to the ligaments.

  • Fractures: These types of injuries occur due to falls, sports injuries, accidents, weakening and loss of bone mass, and osteoporosis.

  • Dislocations: This injury occurs in a joint, where the ends of the bones are in an abnormal position. They are very common on fingers and shoulders. This injury temporarily deforms and immobilizes the joint.

  • Achilles tendon rupture: Has difficulty moving the foot or walking. It occurs when the tendon is overstretched and can tear or rupture and is often very painful.

Sports injury treatment

Although sports injuries occur when playing sports, an injury is usually the same for both a sedentary person and an athlete. But why do some people recover faster than others?

The straightest answer is that they lack the means necessary to do the rehabilitation.

Plus, different bodies react in distinct ways, depending on numerous factors, such as age, physical endurance (high competition athletes normally heal quicker).

  • R.I.C.E. Method (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation): The main objective of this method is to control swelling and pain as soon as possible, continue until minor injuries are healed and, if there are complications, initiate appropriate treatments.

  • Seek emergency attention: It requires a certain skill to control a traumatic situation in an emergency or to be trained to attend someone at that moment. Several sports associations have qualified personnel to act instantly in the event of an accident on a track or playing field. You must know who to turn to in the event of an accident. Immediate pre-hospital medical attention can be vital.

Sports injury prevention

Proper assistance in the event of an injury or accident is essential to reduce any type of risk that an athlete may suffer in sports.

  • Proper technique: Both in the field of medicine and sports, the proper technique must be used to care for an athlete who has suffered some type of trauma during training or competition, otherwise, there could be delays in care or worse, harm instead of help.

  • Proper equipment: It is important to take the necessary precautions and be protected from blows so as not to suffer bruises, breaks, or cuts to the skin. It is your responsibility to be consistent with situations.

  • Rest: A good rest is essential to help the body recover and renew energy. This prevents premature wear due to the overstress that an athlete may have in a certain discipline.

  • Start or resume activity slowly: Conditioning the body slowly so that it can pick up the pace is vital for good performance. Reduces the risk of injury. Warming up and stretching before physical activity helps the body make the most of energy.

Types of diagnosis

Some types of sports injuries are often easier and faster to diagnose than others. There are a wide variety of different tools and methods that are used by sports medicine specialists to detect and control injuries.

The most common ones are listed below:

  • Physical examination: In many relatively simpler cases such as scratches, cuts, or dislocations, they are diagnosed by feeling or simply seeing the injury. For example, shoulder injuries are easily identified by different movements. There are also resistance tests by which the weakness of a certain joint is identified.

  • Medical history: It is important to have a medical history so that the doctor can observe any other problems, and referred to another specialist for a more complete diagnosis.

  • Tests: Among the current diagnostic tests computed tomography (CT), X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and ultrasound scanning are used to identify injuries or disorders that are not visible to the naked eye.
